North Houston to The Woodlands Waterway: A Mazda CX-90 PHEV Local Trip Guide
September 22 2026 - Team Gillman Mazda

The drive from our lot on I-45 to The Woodlands Waterway runs roughly 15 miles, and that distance matters more than it sounds. The 2026 Mazda CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid carries an EPA-estimated 27 miles of all-electric range, so a charged battery gets a north Houston family to the waterfront and back (or just north and parked) before the gas engine even thinks about waking up. The whole plan is simple. Arrive silent, park once, and spend the afternoon with no agenda.

Waterway Square in September is the move. Houston's brutal summer heat is just starting to ease, the fountains are still running, and the dinner crowd stays thin until later. Come mid-afternoon.

The Waterway Itself Earns the Trip

Fifteen miles up I-45 North from our dealership, you step into something that doesn't feel like Houston traffic anymore, and that shift is most of why the trip is worth planning. The Woodlands Waterway runs about 1.5 miles as a linear park and transportation corridor, winding through the Town Center and connecting Waterway Square to Hughes Landing, Lake Woodlands, and everything between.

Waterway Square is the natural anchor. It's a one-acre public plaza with a synchronized fountain-and-light show on a set schedule, a splash pad the kids will find immediately, and outdoor public art that gives adults a reason to keep walking once the kids are done.

Town Green Park sits just off the waterway path. Picture four acres of lawn, more than two football fields long, with thoughtfully placed sculptures and a children's literary labyrinth built around Aesop's Fables characters. This is genuinely well-designed green space, and it shows. If you've got younger kids, plan an hour there before the heat climbs.

browse our CX-90 lineup. And yes, the three-row interior earns its keep when you're packing a stroller, a cooler bag, and soccer cleats for a family outing.

Insider note: The Woodlands Waterway area has public Level 2 EV charging stations at The Woodlands Mall (1201 Lake Woodlands Dr) and near Waterway Avenue in the Town Center. The CX-90 PHEV tops from 20% to 80% on Level 2 in about an hour and a half. Long enough for lunch and a waterway walk, and short enough that you're not stuck waiting around.

The Route: 15 Miles North on I-45, Into a Different Pace

Head north from our dealership at 18010 I-45 and the North Freeway is exactly what you'd expect at rush hour, though a charged PHEV changes how that crawl actually feels. The electric motor handles the stop-and-go cleanly, and the regenerative braking recovers a little range every time traffic stacks up before the Woodlands Parkway exit. Our dealership address is 18010 I-45. Take the Woodlands Parkway exit off I-45 and you're less than a mile from the Waterway corridor.

One honest caveat is worth naming. If you arrive with a depleted battery, the 2026 CX-90 PHEV's 2.5-liter engine and 68-kilowatt electric motor work together, but the transition between gas and electric isn't whisper-smooth (the engine audibly kicks on under heavier loads, a documented pattern in this powertrain). Mazda rates the combined output at up to 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, so performance isn't the issue. Refinement is. The fix is simple. Leave the driveway charged.

our service team can check your PHEV charging system and cabin air filter before the trip. September humidity in Harris County is still brutal on cabin air quality, and a clean filter makes the interior feel noticeably fresher.

  • Charge the night before using a standard 120V outlet (about 6 hours and 40 minutes from 20% to 80%) or a Level 2 240V charger (about 1 hour and 30 minutes)
  • Use EV mode on city streets and I-45 surface traffic; let the system hold battery state for the return leg if you prefer
  • The EPA rates the CX-90 PHEV at 56 MPGe combined when you use the plug-in capability (without charging, it drops to 26 mpg combined on gas alone)
  • Rear-biased i-Activ AWD comes standard; it's not a concern for a flat north Houston run, but the rear bias gives the CX-90 a noticeably more planted feel than front-heavy crossovers at highway speed
  • The NHTSA awarded the 2026 CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating, and it earned a 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ (worth knowing when a three-row full of your people is on the freeway)

The CX-90 PHEV Fits This Specific Trip the Way It Was Designed

What makes the CX-90 PHEV a good match for this corridor, rather than just a capable SUV you happen to be driving, is how neatly its numbers line up with the route. The EPA-estimated 27-mile electric range maps almost exactly to the round-trip distance from our dealership at 18010 I-45 to the Waterway and back. Charge it at home, and a family of seven arrives at Waterway Square in near-silence, parks, and the vehicle sits there consuming nothing while you walk the fountain loop, catch the splash pad, and find a table at a restaurant on Hughes Landing. The gas engine never enters the story.

So is this just a fancy way of saying "good fuel economy"? Not quite. You're using the vehicle's actual design against real local geography, and the three-row cabin (seven-seat capacity, Nappa leather on upper trims, available Japanese Maple wood trim) doesn't hurt when the Woodlands run turns into a dinner reservation.

The CX-50 Hybrid and the CX-50 are excellent for two-row families doing the same I-45 run, and we're happy to walk through the differences. But for a crew that fills the third row, the PHEV format and the specific range math make the CX-90 a legitimate local tool, not just a luxury statement.
