The issue with EVs isn't that they are poor vehicles, but rather that, after Tesla's initial success, most manufacturers rushed into the market with multiple models to help offset the cost of developing their EV platforms, resulting in more EVs than the market could support. While still appreciating the efficiency and lower environmental impact of electrification, many people are shifting their attention toward hybrids. Mazda is notable for not rushing into the EV market prematurely. However, the brand is prepared for the hybrid shopper with the CX-50 Hybrid, a well-designed hybrid aimed directly at the core of the industry: the compact crossover segment. Yahoo!Autos published a review of the CX-50 Hybrid, and Gillman Mazda provides the highlights.
The article's headline is remarkably provocative: "I tested the Mazda CX-50 for a week and it'll make you forget about buying an EV — here's why." It explains that, with a starting price of $33,970, the CX-50 is significantly more affordable than nearly any other EV, while offering ample efficiency and, as a Mazda, driving enjoyment.
"I'm convinced it's one of my favorite hybrids this year. Here's why." The author states this before delving into the main points of the review. The vehicle tested was a 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Premium Plus with an as-tested price of $40,050. What elevates this above the base model are features such as a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, power-folding mirrors, a head-up display, and large 19-inch wheels, among other things. All these are nice additions, but not essentials; what truly makes the vehicle special is common across the entire model line.
All CX-50 Hybrids feature a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine combined with three electric motors, including one in the rear for all-wheel drive. The engine and motors together produce 219 horsepower. After driving 260 miles, the author calculated an average of 40.8 mpg, surpassing its EPA combined estimate of 38. This suggests a possible range of 591 miles, which is well beyond that of most EVs, not to mention human digestive systems.
With a starting MSRP of just under $34K, you can get a highly efficient and stylish compact crossover that never sacrifices driving fun and features an interior that exudes luxury vibes.
The author notes that instead of going fully digital, the CX-50 combines analog gauges with a central digital display. "This gives the CX-50 a traditional-meets-modern look that few vehicles offer nowadays." He also found the head-up display of the Premium Plus model to be "perfectly sized."
The review had some minor issues. He thought the rear seat and cargo space favored the latter too much, noticed the absence of Lane Centering, and found the Adaptive Cruise Control to speed up to its set speed a bit too quickly for his liking. Still, he concluded, "For a family of four, I think it's an excellent choice that perfectly balances everyday practicality — with a level of style and driving enjoyment that most hybrid vehicles lack."
If that sounds like the vehicle for you, visit Gillman Mazda, located just north of Houston on the 45 Freeway, and take the CX-50 Hybrid for a test drive.
