When it comes to the market for mid-size SUVs, some have a use for a third-row seat. Others don't, but appreciate the spacious passenger volume and large cargo area. For them, Mazda offers the CX-70, a premium-level 5-seater mid-size SUV with the beauty, refinement, and extraordinary driving dynamics of a Mazda.
Performance
Mazda offers three different powertrains for the CX-70. There are two versions of Mazda's new 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine, along with a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) model that combines the motors with the brand's 2.5-liter inline-4 engine.
The base turbocharged engine delivers 280 horsepower and peak torque of 332 lb-ft at just 2,000 rpm. This isn't an inline-6, but rather a more traditional V configuration. The advantage of the inline setup is its inherent balance with piston movement, which effectively cancels out primary and secondary vibrations. This results in a smoother engine that's more enjoyable to drive across its rev range. That's why luxury brands, known for their refined drivetrains, often prefer this configuration.
This engine also features a mild-hybrid system that utilizes a motor-generator to assist with acceleration and smooth out the start of the auto start-stop system, both of which help save fuel. The engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and power is sent to all four wheels, as all-wheel drive is standard on all models. This powertrain delivers an EPA-estimated 24 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG combined on regular fuel.
Models with the Turbo S designation use a higher boost turbocharger and receive modifications to accommodate its extra power. This is the most powerful drivetrain in the lineup, boasting 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, which still peaks at 2,000 rpm with 91 octane fuel. It is also paired with the 8-speed shiftable automatic transmission and sends power to all four wheels.
The PHEV drivetrain offers the best of both worlds. Charge it fully at night using a standard household socket, and it will deliver 30 miles of EV-only driving (up from 6 miles in 2025). This can often cover the daily driving needs of many owners, meaning the PHEV could go days or even weeks without using any gas, depending on your driving habits. When the 2.5-liter engine kicks in, it operates like a typical hybrid, with a total power output of 323 horsepower, matching the Turbo S's peak torque of 369 lb-ft, albeit at a higher 4,000 rpm. This results in an MPGe (the energy equivalent of mpg) rating of 56 combined, and a highway combined mpg of 25. The total range with a full tank and a fully charged battery is 490 miles.
The chassis features a front double-wishbone suspension that, compared to a strut suspension, isolates the dampers from lateral stress when encountering bumps on a curve. At the rear is an independent multi-link setup, and both front and rear springs and shocks are tuned to deliver the nimble and sure-footed driving experience that Mazda is known for, even with a vehicle of this size. Helping with that is Kinematic Posture Control, which improves handling by applying braking to the inside rear wheel during turns.
Exterior
The exterior showcases how effectively Mazda's "Kodo" design language works across a broad surface. "Kodo" means "Soul of Motion" and aims to convey a sense of movement and energy with flowing lines inspired by nature. The smooth surface shaping does the work, eliminating the need for gimmicky fender vents, "floating" roofs, and other fleeting styling trends, which means the CX-70 will still look attractive and stylish long after the last payment is made. For 2026, Mazda's new black logo is applied to all models, with some models featuring additional black trim.
Interior
The CX-70 delivers an upscale cabin that Mazda is known for. The driver enjoys a sporty 3-spoke steering wheel with easy-to-use controls. The 12.3-inch screen is neatly tucked into the upper dash. Just below the seat-colored middle dash panel and center vents is a full set of physical controls for the HVAC and other systems.
Leather seating and trim are standard across the model line, with upgrades to Nappa and quilted Nappa leather on higher trims. There's plenty of room for both front and rear passengers. While the cargo space is mainly similar to the CX-90, the CX-70 offers a large underfloor storage area.
Technology
All models have a 12.3-inch horizontal center display. Mazda recommends using the rotary control on the center console to navigate the screen, although smartphone interfaces can be accessed by touch. Most trims include wireless phone charging, while higher trims feature wireless smartphone compatibility, a 12-inch digital driver display, a 12-speaker Bose® audio system, and a head-up display.
Safety and Driver Assistance
The CX-70 hatchback has an overall 5-star rating from the NHTSA and received a 5 out of 5 stars in all individual impact test categories. Additionally, the model has been named a TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the IIHS, their highest rating.
Standard on all models is the i-ACTIVSENSE suite of driver assist and safety technologies that use cameras and sensors for various features such as:
- Mazda Radar Cruise Control
- Lane Keep Assist
- Lane Departure Warning System
- Blind Sport Monitoring
- Smart Brake Support
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert
- Driver Attention Alert
- Rear Seat Alert
- Vehicle exit warning
In addition to the usual dual front and side-impact and side-curtain airbags, all models also feature knee airbags for the driver and front passenger.
