2026 introduces a fully redesigned Mazda CX-5 to the market. This is the third generation of Mazda's best-selling model, which first debuted in 2012 as a 2013 model and introduced the "Kodo" design language now used on all Mazda vehicles. Since then, Mazda has sold over 1.4 million CX-5s in the US and 4.5 million worldwide. The all-new 2026 model features a refined version of the familiar CX-5 front, a more spacious cabin, and updated technology.
Performance
Often regarded as the most fun-to-drive model in its class, the drivetrain remains the least changed aspect of the 2026 CX-5. It continues to be powered by a normally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-4 engine with SkyActive-G technology, which enables a higher-than-normal compression ratio to enhance performance. The engine delivers 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. This latest update has been thoughtfully refined to be more adaptable, providing quicker responses when needed while maintaining a calm, quiet demeanor that adjusts to your driving style. The engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard. As of now, 2026 EPA fuel economy estimates are not available; however, the 2025 model with a similar setup was rated at 23 city/29 highway/25 combined for AWD models.
An in-house developed Hybrid model is coming, but it will be later in the 2026 calendar year and may arrive as an early 2027 model.
The CX-5's suspension, featuring MacPherson struts in front and a multilink setup in the rear, is typical for the segment, but the key difference is in the tuning. Mazda always aims to produce the best driver's vehicle in every class it enters, and the CX-5 is a prime example. The vehicle inspires confidence through every turn with poise and athleticism, transmitting plenty of information from the steering. It avoids a harsh ride but remains well connected to the road. Reviewers consistently find the CX-5 to be the most satisfying vehicle in its class, and the 2026 model continues with that tradition.
Exterior
After discussing handling, the CX-5 is often regarded as the most attractive model in its class. The flowing curves and overall organic look of the Kodo design language give it a refined appearance free of awkward creases, trucklike pretensions, and gimmicky details. Therefore, the new design is evolutionary, featuring a similar window treatment and front end as current models. A closer look reveals a more sculpted, wider stance around the Mazda Signature Wing grille, with sharper lighting elements. The latest update to the Kodo design draws inspiration from the Japanese architecture principle called "Kigumi," which highlights precise wood joinery without the need for screws or nails. This influence is visible where the body meets the fender trim.
At the rear, a new, sharper lighting design provides a family tie with larger Mazda crossover models, such as the CX-70 and CX-90. "MAZDA" is proudly displayed in place of the traditional badge logo.
Interior
The cabin reveals greater changes. The goal was to provide an environment that is functional, attractive, spacious, uncluttered, and, above all, serene, providing focus for the driver and comfort for the passengers. The model's 4.5-inch increase in both length and wheelbase and a half-inch increase in width is reflected in a more spacious interior. Passenger comfort has been thoughtfully improved with more rear leg, knee, and headroom, making it easier for rear-seat passengers to stretch out and relax. An available panoramic sunroof adds a wonderful sense of openness, and there is now seven-color ambient lighting, making every journey feel even more enjoyable day and night.
Even the door openings are wider for easier ingress and egress. These touches help ensure the CX-5 offers a comfortable, light, and inviting experience on long drives. Behind the passengers, the extra vehicle length adds two inches to the cargo area, which has a lower lift-in height, while the overall height is one inch higher.
Technology
Sitting prominently against the soft dash surface is either a 12.9-inch display or an available 15.6-inch center touchscreen —the largest ever offered on a Mazda. At the bottom of the screen are permanent controls for the climate system, combining instant access and useful visual feedback. The large screen is backed by the Google Built-in operating system, which features on-board Google Maps navigation. Wireless smartphone compatibility and wireless smartphone charging are standard across the model line
The Google Built-in system also features a smart voice command system that lets owners speak naturally, ask detailed questions, and guide the conversation with follow-up questions—so there's no need to memorize specific commands or phrases. The operating system also enables owners to access the Google Play Store for a variety of compatible in-vehicle apps.
Safety and Driver Assistance
As of this writing, Mazda has not revealed the details of its safety systems. The current model has an overall 5-star rating from the NHTSA and received a "Good" rating for all IIHS crash tests. Mazda can be expected to build on this and is expected to provide enhancements to its safety and driver assist technologies that presently include pre-collision warning, front automatic emergency braking, blind spot alert, lane deviation sensors, lane keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.
