Competing in the sub-compact category, the Mazda CX-30 is the brand's smallest crossover SUV. Performance

Like the Mazda3, which shares its platform, the CX-30's drivetrain and chassis are infused with Mazda's SKYACTIV technology, a comprehensive engineering approach that enhances all aspects of the Mazda3's drivetrain and chassis. Its application in the engine involves some innovation in the combustion chamber, resulting in a 13:1 compression ratio compared to 10.0 to 10.8 in most competitors. This allows the engine to generate more power for a given amount of fuel without risking knocking. The engine produces 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, with EPA ratings of 26/33/29 mpg city/highway/combined. Both trims have "turbo" in their names because they feature a turbocharged version of the 2.5-liter engine, delivering 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, impressive numbers for a vehicle of this size and weight. EPA-estimated figures for this engine are 22/30/25.

Both engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission before power is sent to all four wheels using the standard i-ACTIV all-wheel-drive system on all models.

The CX-30 has MacPherson struts in the front and a torsion beam suspension in the rear. Usually, a torsion beam isn't associated with sporty handling. However, Mazda's chassis engineers defied the norms. As Car and Driver describes it, "Its crisp steering and fluid body movements make it a pleasure to pilot on a twisty road and provide a sense of stability when cruising."

Helping the chassis is Mazda's exclusive G-Vectoring Control Plus system, which subtly improves handling and stability by adjusting engine torque and lightly applying brakes at precise moments to optimize weight transfer during cornering, thus enhancing the vehicle's yaw response. Its exact actions are barely noticeable, but overall, the driver gains more confidence when turning and feels more connected to the vehicle.

Exterior

The CX-30 demonstrates how effectively Mazda's "Kodo" design language translates to a smaller exterior. "Kodo" means "Soul of Motion," aiming to evoke a sense of movement and vibrancy even when the vehicle is stationary, with flowing lines inspired by nature. It allows the vehicle's form to speak for itself, avoiding the need for gimmicky details to create interest. From every angle, the exterior is sleek and unified.

Interior

Because it works so well in the similarly sized Mazda3, Mazda applied its dash to the CX-30 as well, so it too benefits from an upscale appearance with a minimalist yet functional design. The 8.8-inch display isn't the largest in the class, but it is nicely integrated into the dash and angled toward the driver. All physical controls on the dash and the sporty 3-spoke steering wheel provide a quality feel that is rare in this category. Mazda's driver-focused interior maintains practicality and offers the instant-read clarity of analog gauges. Lush colors, leather, a 12-speaker Bose® audio system, and other upscale features on higher trims put luxury brands in this segment on notice. Behind the second row seat, you will find 20.1 cubic feet of cargo space, which expands to 45.2 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks folded.

Technology

Mazda's driver-focused design carefully shapes the cabin technology to keep you connected and safe. The center touchscreen is easy to operate when parked, but when you're on the road, all controls are conveniently accessible via a rotary knob and button on the center console. This smart setup means you won't need to reach out and touch the screen while driving, helping you keep your eyes on the road.
